View through Europeana Collections
On the copper engraving is depicted James Brydges, Duke of Chandos. For two years, between 1717 and 1719, Georg Friedrich Händel was in the service of the English nobleman. During this time, “Esther,” the first English oratorio of the hallic composer, was born. The work of art was created by the English copper female Sarah Reading. She was presented with a painting by the Swedish English draftsman and painter Michael Dahl (1656-1743). The English nobleman is depicted in a stately pose. His left arm is outside the wide, swarming robe. The shoulders, arms and the right hand are covered by a Hermelin overthrow. A long wig adorns the head. The caption names the duke’s name: "James Brydges. First Duke of Chandos."A coat of arms can also be found on the lower edge of the picture. The signature of the pen "Dahl Pinx. Reading Sculp."It is clear that it is his origin. Signature: Dahl Pinx. Reading Sculp. Caption: James Brydges. First Duke of Chandos. (Stiftung Händel-Haus Halle Foundation)
