The Work of Seleukos Nikator

Abstract By the time Seleukos came to Syria as its ruler, in 301, that land had been under Macedonian rule for a full generation, since its conquest by Alexander in 333. Alexander had occupied it without opposition in the exploitation of his victory at Issos. The only substantial political authority in Syria at the time, apart from the Persian governor, had been the city-kingdom of Arados, which had been speedily surrendered to him as he approached; in return he allowed the kingship to continue. A detachment of Macedonian troops was sent to Thapsakos on the Euphrates to block any Persian attempt to recover Syria and to prepare two bridges to allow Alexanders army to cross over in pursuit of further conquests.
