Berenike, daughter of PtolemyII

View through CrossRef
AbstractSecond wife of the Seleucid king Antiochos II Theos, Berenike was the daughter of Ptolemy II Philadelphos and his first wife Arsinoe I. After the death of her husband Antiochos II in 246bce, she acted in political opposition to Seleukos II Kallinikos and Laodike, Antiochos II's first wife. Berenike and her infant son Antiochos were killed in Antioch by partisans of Laodike and Seleukos II, but the exact chronology of the murder is uncertain. The division of the Seleucid kingdom in two fronts led to the Third Syrian War between Berenike's brother Ptolemy III and Seleukos II.
