Although Władysław Stanisław Reymont is a Nobel Prize winner, some of the fundamental research and studies on his work are not free from errors and misconceptions. The aim of this article is to re-establish the origins of Reymont’s work, Lili, which has been rife with misconceptions until now. Contrary to scholars’ position, the novella was not written under the influence of his relationship with the writer’s alleged fiancée, Antonina Szczygielska. The article analyzes the ac­tual circumstances surrounding the work’s creation, taking into account new facts, correspondence, diary entries, and the work’s manuscript.
