Makina the Debtor, Makina the Creditor: Migrant Bodies and Symbolic Debt in Yuri Herrera’s Señales que precederán al fin del mundo.

Abstract: A growing phenomenon in migration from the Global South to the U.S. is the increasing indebtedness of migrants, who must secure loans from small banking institutions and community financial networks to finance their journeys, oftentimes risking death or deportation. Beyond its material consequences and financial obligations, this article argues that debt also encompasses moral and symbolic dimensions that shape belonging, reciprocity, and community formation in host societies. Using an interdisciplinary cultural studies approach, this study analyzes Makina, the transmigrant protagonist of Señales que precederán al fin del mundo (2009) by Yuri Herrera, as a figure navigating the liminal space between debt and community. Drawing from Maurizio Lazzarato’s The Making of the Indebted Man, Lucy Cavallero and Verónica Gago’s feminist critique of debt in Una lectura feminista de la deuda, and Roberto Esposito’s, Keenan Ferguson’s, and David Graber’s inquiries into moral and symbolic indebtedness (Communitas, “Debt’s Moral,” and Debt: The First 5000 Years respectively), this article explores how Makina both embodies and challenges the financial and social structures of the creditor-debtor relationship. By positioning herself at its margins while simultaneously acting as an intermediary, she disrupts and deconstructs the binary between economic subjugation and communal obligation, offering new ways to understand migrant indebtedness in contemporary Latin American border literature.   Resumen: Un fenómeno creciente en la migración del Sur global a los Estados Unidos es el endeudamiento de los migrantes, quienes deben solicitar préstamos a instituciones bancarias pequeñas y redes financieras comunitarias para financiar sus viajes, a menudo arriesgando la muerte o la deportación. Más allá de sus consecuencias materiales y obligaciones financieras, este artículo sostiene que la deuda también abarca dimensiones morales y simbólicas, moldeando el sentido de pertenencia, reciprocidad y formación comunitaria en las sociedades de acogida. A partir de un enfoque interdisciplinario desde los estudios culturales, este artículo analiza a Makina, la protagonista transmigrante de Señales que precederán al fin del mundo (2009) de Yuri Herrera, como una figura que navega el espacio liminal entre la deuda y la comunidad. Basándose en Maurizio Lazzarato y su obra The Making of the Indebted Man, la crítica feminista de la deuda de Lucy Cavallero y Verónica Gago en Una lectura feminista de la deuda, y las investigaciones sobre la deuda moral y simbólica de Roberto Esposito, Keenan Ferguson y David Graeber (Communitas, “Debt’s Moral” y Debt: The First 5000 Years respectivamente), este artículo explora cómo Makina encarna y desafía las estructuras financieras y sociales de la relación acreedor-deudor. Al situarse en los márgenes de esta relación y actuar simultáneamente como intermediaria, Makina interrumpe y deconstruye la dicotomía entre subyugación económica y obligación comunitaria, ofreciendo nuevas perspectivas para comprender la deuda migrante en la literatura fronteriza latinoamericana contemporánea.
