Het verhaal van John Henry is meer dan een folkloristisch epos; het weerspiegelt de complexe relatie tussen ‘ras’, arbeid en technologie in het industriële tijdperk. Als symbool van zwarte mannelijkheid biedt John Henry een krachtig tegenbeeld van de onderdrukking waarmee Afro-Amerikaanse arbeiders werden geconfronteerd. Dit artikel verkent hoe zijn volksverhaal functioneert binnen bredere maatschappelijke structuren van raciale segregatie, economische exploitatie en technologische vooruitgang.
