The chapter begins with coverage of D. Wayne Lukas's third and fourth Kentucky Oaks winners, Open Mind (1989) and Seaside Attraction (1990). It then shifts its focus to 1991 winner Lite Light, who was a first-rate racehorse but was perhaps even better known for her flamboyant owners, headed by rapper MC Hammer (born Stanley Burrell). Hammer and his fellow Oaktown Stable owners (his father and brothers) had been longtime racing fans before Hammer's wealth allowed them to become owners, and Lite Light gave Hammer and his family the distinction of being the first Blacks to own a Kentucky Oaks winner since 1900.
