Joffre, Marshal Joseph (1852–1931)

AbstractFrench World War I general, famous for victory in the Battle of the Marne, September 9, 1914. Joseph Jacques‐Césaire Joffre was born in Rivesaltes, France (near Pau) in 1852, the son of a prosperous barrelmaker of peasant ancestry. Joffre entered the École Polytechnique in Paris in 1869 at age 17. His education was interrupted for a year by the Franco‐Prussian War, for which he was marshaled but did not see action. Upon completion of an additional term at the École Polytechnique in 1871 (his class emergednon‐breveté), he served for several years as a military engineer, upgrading and constructing fortresses in northern France. He was promoted to captain in 1876.
