Tracing the Loss and Gain of Originality in Bulleh Shah’s Translated Poem “Ranjha Ranjha Kardi” By Parvez Iqbal Anjum

This article tends to examine the complex interchange between originality and the translation in Parvez Iqbal Anjum’s execution of Bulleh Shah’s poem, “Ranjha Ranjha Kardi”. Through this analysis, it investigates how Anjum’s translation both captures the Bulleh Shah’s message while introducing elements of originality that reflect the translator’s unique voice. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research approach. It utilizes Eugene Nida's theory, which emphasizes focusing on the essence of the original text rather than adhering strictly to the formal equivalence of the source language's structure. Nida's theory highlights the importance of capturing the natural equivalence of the source message in the target language. For this study, five poems from Bulleh Shah's kalam, translated by Parvez Iqbal Anjum, have been selected. These poems are analyzed to explore how Nida's theory applies to translating poetic works, particularly in maintaining the emotional and cultural essence of the original text. Textual analysis has been a method used to analyze data. The findings revealed the loss and the gain of originality in the translated poem of Bulleh Shah by Parvez Iqbal Anjum.
