Research on Different Strategies in Producing News Programs of The Two Television Stations: Lao National Television Station and Vientiane Capital Television Station

View through CrossRef
The aim of this study was to perform a comparative analysis of the news production and transmission tactics of two television stations: Vientiane Capital Television Station and Lao National Television Station. The research discussion is separated into several areas: news content selection strategies, news content editing strategies, news broadcasting channels, news platforms, and audience targeting. These areas are based on the 5W model theory in communication studies, which includes the content of communication, channel of communication, and audience, among other things. In this study, the author focused on four main aspects: news program production and broadcasting policy methods, news program management strategies, news program editing strategies, and news content selection procedures. The subjects of this study, which makes use of qualitative research methods and observation techniques, are the Lao National Television Station, which broadcasts sports, foreign, and internal news programs; the Vientiane Capital Television stations, which broadcast youth news programs, sports update programs, economic news desk programs, open business world programs, Vientiane Today programs, and cultural news programs. The theories of TV production and program development, the gatekeeper theory, the social duty of the mass media, and the elements related to TV program production were also used in this study. The research reveals that Lao National Television Station produces both internal and foreign news programs, covering political, economic, social-culture, sports, and important events in Lao society. Vientiane Capital Television Station, on the other hand, only produces social and cultural news, including youth, economic, sports, and cultural news. The two stations have different strategies for managing news programs, including live and taped production, host use, language, translation, and interviews. The final step involves editing techniques, video editing software, and final checks before broadcasting. The study discovered that there are both similarities and contrasts between the news creation and broadcasting practices of these two television channels. But the most crucial step in making a television program stand out and obtain a competitive edge is to select a news production and broadcasting approach that sets it apart from other television media.
