Les enquêtes et la mise au point de ce dictionnaire encyclopédique de la langue d’un des peuples paléonigritiques les plus fascinants du Nord-Cameroun, à savoir les Koma Gimbé des Monts Alantika, constituent une véritable aventure scientifique qui depuis 1979 et jusqu’à 2016, a mobilisé tant sur le terrain qu’en laboratoire plusieurs institutions (ISH-CERELTRA du Cameroun, CNRS et Coopération française, ORSTOM/IRD, Université de Naples « L’Orientale ») et les trois chercheurs affectés à ce projet : Michel Dieu, linguiste du CNRS (prématurément décédé en 1992), Louis Perrois, ethnologue de l’ORSTOM/IRD et Henry Tourneux, linguiste du CNRS.
