Interpersonal relationship and workplace productivity among librarians in universities in South-South, Nigeria

This study examined interpersonal relationship and workplace productivity among librarians in universities in South-South, Nigeria. The population of the the study consisted of all the librarians 382 librarians in university libraries in three states (Bayelsa, Delta and Edo states) in South-South, Nigeria. However, a total of 141 of the librarians were purposively drawn as sample from 13 university libraries in the three states. The instrument used for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire entitled “Interpersonal Relationship and Workplace Productivity Questionnaire (IRWPQ)”. The questionnaire was face and content validated by three lecturers in library and information and measurement and evaluated. The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach’s alpha. The reliability coefficients obtained were 0.84 and 0.76 for Interpersonal Relationship Scale and Workplace Productivity Scale respectively. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was used in answering and testing the hypothesis. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed a strong positive relationship between interpersonal relationship and workplace productivity as well as significant relationship between interpersonal relationship and workplace productivity among the librarians in universities in South-South, Nigeria. It was recommended that good working environment should be ensured in the workplace if librarians’ level of interpersonal relationship is to be positively improved and maintained.
