Life (Josephus’ Autobiography)

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter on Josephus’ Life offers an introduction into the various layers of his autobiography. Moving beyond the primary exercise of determining fact or fiction in his account (Did this really happen? Is he lying?), it aims to introduce readers to the possibilities that lie beyond the quest for historical facts and truth. Furthermore, it invites readers to appreciate Josephus’ literary skills in composing his autobiography. It also explores his enthusiastic self-praise by his use of rhetorical strategies aimed at offsetting potential offense and envy. Josephus encourages his audience to identify with him, which in turn leads us to look at the deeper layers woven into Life (favorably) comparing Josephus (and the identifying audience) to the imperial family and highlighting parallels to leading biblical figures, particularly Nehemiah.
