An Innovative ES-PCP Technology and Key Learnings from Field Trials in the Kern River Field, Bakersfield, CA

View through CrossRef
Abstract An estimated 90% of wells worldwide use some method of artificial lift to assist in the production of reservoir fluids. The type of artificial lift employed has a direct impact on an operator's ability to realize maximum potential from developing an oil or gas field. This paper will outline the development, field trials and path forward of an innovative artificial lift system at the Kern River Field in Bakersfield, CA. This artificial lift system combines an electric submersible permanent magnet motor and drivetrain (ES) with a progressive cavity pump (PCP). This ES-PCP allows for significant benefits over other methods of artificial lift in terms of system efficiency, pump placement, reduced power consumption, use in deviated or horizontal wells, and its ability to handle produced solids. Additionally, this ES-PCP system allows for a smaller footprint and environmental benefits as compared to other artificial lift systems. In 2013 a pilot was conducted for the first field trial of this artificial lift system at the Kern River Field. This paper will elaborate on the key learnings derived from these field trials.
