Like Helena Modjeska, Józef and Lucyna Kotarbiński need no introduction. Kotarbiński met Helena Modjeska during her work in Warsaw, and often wrote about her in his reviews and columns. As an actor, he partnered Modjeska during her guest appearances when she came to Poland as a world star. Their contacts strengthened during Kotarbiński’s management in Krakow, when the actress came to Poland for her last tour. The first part of the article tells how Kotarbiński (an insightful and educated observer) described Modjeska’s acting skills and talent, analyzed her technique and roles in detail. The second part contains information about the acquaintance of the Kotarbińskis (especially Lucyna) with the actress and describes the nature of their private and professional contacts related to the organization of the star’s performances in Krakow, the choice of repertoire, salary, rehearsals, etc.
