On ne saurait prétendre qu'Hésiode fait allusion à Homère ou à la poésie épique quand il déclare que les Muses Héliconiennes peuvent indifféremment conter des mensonges ou proclamer des vérités (Théog. 27 sq.). En décrivant, dans les Travaux, le destin de la trième race d'hommes et sa propre victoire aux jeux d'Amphidamas, Hésiode mentionne l'arrêt des Grecs à Aulis et leur voyage vers Troie. L'A. suggère que ces allusions nous aident à identifier le sujet de l'hymne qui valut au poète le trépied par lui consacré aux Muses de l'Hélicon.
