In serial monogamy, most individuals maintain a series of nonoverlapping monogamous relationships. Among animals, monogamy may be social (paired living arrangement), sexual, or genetic (partners reproduce only with each other), and the three need not co‐occur. All forms are rare among primates. Serial social monogamy resembles monogamous marriage among humans.
