Monogamy
View through CrossRef
The condition of having a single partner, or monogamy, is a complex social system in animals including humans. There are three related levels of monogamous relationships: (1) social monogamy describes being paired with a single social partner, (2) while mating monogamy relates to a single sexual partner, and (3) reproductive monogamy signals the exclusive contributions of two individuals to an offspring. Parental monogamy is a subset of social monogamy, when partners together care for offspring. Lifelong social monogamy has to date not been confirmed in pair‐living animals, who usually practice serial social monogamy. In many pair‐living species, males and females opportunistically engage in extrapair copulations, but only in some cases has the conception of extrapair young been confirmed. The origin of social monogamy has been related to females living solitarily and males being unable to defend more than one female, although the risk of male infanticide may also lead to pair living.
