This chapter highlights Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Jean Le Rond d'Alembert on December 27, 1755. Rousseau expresses his disapproval over d'Alembert's pursuit of Charles Palissot's expulsion. He says that he “would very much regret the time that all this has made you lose, without the testimony of friendship in my favor that results from it.” Rousseau urges d'Alembert to let the business go, saying that Palissot's expulsion would cause him more pain than pleasure. He asks, “Why would we return harm to this poor man for the real good he has done me?” Finally, Rousseau thanks d'Alembert with all of his heart.
