This chapter presents Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Jean Le Rond d'Alembert on June 25, 1758. In this letter, Rousseau addresses his response to d'Alembert's article “Geneva.” He begins by expressing his gratitude for the honor that he has received from d'Alembert on more than one occasion. Rousseau then tells d'Alembert that he has given “a pernicious piece of advice” and that he could not remain silent. He says that “if my boldness offends you, you will only be too well avenged for it by the weakness of the work.” Rousseau explains that he is only doing his duty and because of that he feels satisfied and justified.
