Daladier,Édouard (1884–1970)

View through CrossRef
Édouard Daladier (1884–1970) was one of the foremost politicians and statesmen of the French Third Republic. A heavyweight within the Radical Party, he held several Cabinet posts in the interwar period, although his diplomatic career would be defined by his third and final tenure as the president of the council (April 1938–March 1940). This period saw Daladier play a central role in the frantic diplomatic maneuverings in Europe in the final months of peace, including the infamous Munich Agreement of September 1938. After Munich, however, Daladier's diplomacy would contribute significantly to the Western democracies' abandonment of appeasement in favor of a policy of firmness.
