Abstract
The connection of William Shakespeare’s company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, with Scotland began before King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. That might explain why a play about a Scottish prince was written. There is evidence that two independent pieces about Macbeth were circulating around London at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The first record of the Tragedie of Macbeth is by Simon Forman in 1611 although the first print of the play was made after Shakespeare’s death in the First Folio. There remains much that is unknown about Macbeth the person and Macbeth the literary character
