View through Europeana Collections
The picture has been taken in connection with cultural historical characterization of the Nathanael Church, Tierp April 2007.
The Nathanael Church is beautifully situated at a wooded height in the south of Tierp’s purchase. The site of the church had already been designated in the Tierp Purchase Plan, carried out by the architect Cyrillus Johansson in 1918. Below the church, to the west and northwest, is the cemetery and the parish home. The church is located in the fund of Kyrkogatan. In front of the church an open place is formed, which is bounded by a wall of support. A wide stone staircase leads up to the church entrance. To the northeast of the open site is a white trimmed mortuary from 1959 in time-typical architecture. The parish home is located on the slope down towards the cemetery, northwest of the church.
The Nathanael Church was inaugurated in 1934 and is built of brick with smooth-plastered white facades. It is oriented north-south with towers to the north and cows to the south and sacristy to the east. The choral part is narrower than the longhouse. The church has a steep saddle roof covered with slate slabs. The tower roof is fitted with a copperplate clad lanternin that is crowned by a gilded cross. The longhouse is provided with large, round-arched window openings with wooden arches painted in light gray and the tower has large wooden sound gaps. The entrance in the ground floor of the tower is provided with a classic portico crowned by a temple gable.
The church is designed by architect Lars Nilsson Gramén. It has a very traditional character. Many churches erected in the 1920s and 30s relate in their style to older parish churches and the Church of Nathanel is one of them.
