Gryta Church, Gryta parish, Uppland November 2002

View through Europeana Collections
The picture has been taken in connection with the cultural historical characterization of Gryta Church, Gryta parish, Uppland November 2002. The church consists of longhouses and cows of the same width. The choir has a rounded shape to the east. To the west of the longhouse is a narrower building part, which forms the lower part of a former tower. On the south side of the church there is a house of arms. The sacristy is located on the north side of the church. The longhouse is the oldest building part and originated from the 1100s. Sometime between 1250 and 1350, the choir was built, replacing an older, narrower, Romanesque choir. In the 1400s the church was provided with towers, gunhouses and sacristy. The church room was vaulted with a brick rib vault. In the late 1500s, the church was damaged by a lightning strike. It was probably after that event that the choir was rebuilt and got its half-round finish. In the 1770s the entire tower was demolished except the ground floor and the roof was rebuilt so that the entire church was covered by an even saddle roof. The windows were raised and made larger in the 1790s. The church is built with shellwalls of graystone. The façades are trimmed with spirit plaster that is stripped of lime in ochre yellow. The roof is covered with sprung wooden shavings. The window benches are also covered with tar shavings.
