Scatter and Resist

This chapter discusses Ferrier’s reactions as a writer and campaigner to the triple disaster that struck Fukushima on 11/3/2011; the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster which ensued. Immediately after the earthquake, Ferrier travelled up to Fukushima and wrote a witness account of what he saw and learned, both in Fukushima and later in Tokyo. Since then, he has also written numerous articles and film scripts, and edited two volumes of essays and creative works on the subject. All of these works are discussed and examined in the chapter. My analyses describe Ferrier’s collaborative approach to the task of awareness-raising about Fukushima, as well as his adoption of an aesthetic learned from both his actual and readerly experiences of disaster, which I have called ‘an aesthetic of scatteredness’.
