The Grammatical Ecology of Aspect in Pastaza Quechua

Abstract
Aspect expression is linked to the sensible world of spatiotemporal experience. In Pastaza Quechua this link is dramatically apparent in an elaborate subsystem of sound symbolic adverbs that function within the grammatical and expressive architecture of the language. These adverbs operate beyond the stem-specific aspect distinctions of the verb, specifying discourse-level markedness values such as punctuality, completiveness, and resultativity. Sound-symbolic adverbs exploit grammatical aspect distinctions in order to allow speakers the use of various kinds of medial verbs and chained clause constructions without losing their sense of communicative clarity.
