Atonement in the Old Testament
View through CrossRef
This chapter discusses several prominent atonement themes of the Old Testament as represented by key terms. These are the verbal, nominative, and derivative forms of (1) atone, (2) save, and (3) redeem. These terms—and their expanded usage in uniquely LDS scripture— are examined briefly through the lenses of diachronic/semantic shift, translation, and transformation/adaptation (through the King James Version) among Latter-day Saints. How and why did Latter-day Saint understanding or application of the ideas represented by these terms diverge from Israelite understandings?
