This chapter covers the geologic features of Uptown and Ravenswood buildings. Graceland Cemetery's founders appreciated and took full advantage of both the site's high ground and yielding soil. The chapter elaborates on the geologic significance of Graceland Cemetery, citing the great open-air laboratory of differential weathering of Chicago. Moreover, Graceland Cemetery is the home of multiple monuments, such as the William M. Monument, Martin Ryerson Tomb, and Howard Van Doren Shaw Monument.
