Les années 1880 marquent l’entrée de Stendhal et de ses œuvres romanesques dans la sphère de l’édition pour amateurs. À cet égard, l’édition Conquet du Rouge et le Noir en 1884 marque une nouvelle étape dans la réception du roman et sera d’ailleurs suivie de plusieurs entreprises similaires. Cette étude s’intéresse au programme iconographique déployé dans trois éditions d’amateur du Rouge et le Noir, richement illustrées, et s’interroge sur les (re)lectures que les gravures proposent de cette œuvre dont les ambiguïtés et les non-dits constituent autant de défis pour le dessinateur.
