Abstract
This chapter addresses Chariots of Fire (1981), a film that marks a division between old and new British cinema. It identifies three strands of British production at that time of transition. The first strand is the high-profile, high-quality Oscar-friendly British ‘heritage’ style of film that follows directly in the wake of Chariots of Fire itself. The chapter looks at the Harry Potter and James Bond films, as well as history and literature films such as Shakespeare in Love (1998). It then turns to British art cinema and independent cinema, before considering the works of Stephen Frears, Mike Leigh, and Ken Loach.
