Tutankhamun’s Chariots
View through CrossRef
Abstract
The history of chariots in Egypt is reviewed, and then the chapter focuses on the six chariots found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. Their construction and use are described, and it is explained why so few chariots have been found, in spite of the fact that there must have been thousands used by the military. The depictions of Tutankhamun in his chariot on the famous “painted chest” are described, and it is shown that the circle that often appears behind the horses’ necks is really part of a “hood ornament” that was attached to the chariot. It is pointed out that not all chariots were suitable for military use, and some almost certainly were only used for state occasions.
