Barrels Kangxi, Qing Dynasty

BARRELS. Around, bowl-shaped, with slightly swung edge and on a foot edge. Decor in Famille verte (“green family”) with five figures in a landscape. In the middle a beach, on the right a large pine tree (symbol of a long life). Overglaze painting, contours in dark brown or brown red. The glaze in several places with insignificant unevenness, on the edge flaked, on the bottom outside marks after blisters. The Taoistian Qin Gao, who lived under the fighting states (c. 475 - 221 BC.), was famous for knowing how to extend life. One day he decided to descend into a river to capture the “dragon’s son,” with a view to becoming immortal. The dragon’s son was a red carp and Qin Gao told his disciples to build a temple on the river to a certain date. Just that day, Qin Gao rode out of the water on the red carp and made his way to the temple, where he received thousands supporters.
