Art as a space for critical reflection of identity Maja Smrekar: Case study

The main thesis of this work is that art is a framework for reontologizing fixed and totalizing polarities, such as human being/nature, human/nonhuman factor, biological/technological, identity/fluidity etc. In order to support this thesis, I have contemplated the work of the Slovenian artist Maja Smrekar through a discussion of views of the French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The paper will analyse the manner in which Maja Smrekar's work Hybrid Family provokes thinking within the framework of identity, as well as how the concept of becoming (Deleuze and Guattari) is manifested in Maja Smrekar's transgressive and excessive works. The philosophical concepts of becoming a woman and becoming an animal, by French philosophers Deleuze and Guattari, are seen as an adequate theoretical tool to support the thesis. One of the goals of the paper is to point out the importance of transdisciplinary understanding of problems and asking questions which are difcult to ask within disciplinary research. Research methods applied in this work are comparative analysis of texts, synthesis, observation, generalization and analogy.
