Abstract
In 1825, when Jean-Martin Charcot was born in Paris, his country was still heavily influenced by the events and philosophical guideposts of the French Revolution. The stormy days of the First Republic were past, Napoleon had been dead for four years, and the people surrounding Charcot-his parents, neighbors, and teachers—were the survivors of these historic events. Charcot was born into the turmoil of continued political change that included the final phase of the Restoration and the revolts of 1830, romantically immortalized by Victor Hugo in Les Misérables.
