Artur Azevedo e a opereta: Abel, Helena

RESUMO O presente artigo é um estudo crítico de Abel, Helena, opereta de Artur Azevedo, a partir da comparação com La Belle Hélène, opereta de Offenbach, com libreto de Ludovic Halévy e Henri Meilhac. O propósito, aqui, é o de analisar os processos de produção do cômico utilizados pelos libretistas franceses e pelo comediógrafo brasileiro. O artigo verifica as aproximações e diferenças entre as obras, aponta a especificidade de cada uma e em que medida se dá a relação intertextual proposta por Artur Azevedo ao se apropriar da opereta de Offenbach, mantendo sua música, mas transferindo a ação para uma pequena cidade do interior, não muito distante do Rio de Janeiro. Buscou-se também caracterizar o contexto teatral brasileiro no qual a opereta se impôs como gênero popular de grande sucesso entre os anos de 1860 e 1880.
