New-Generation Skid Testers for the 1990s

Economical friction testers are needed which will generate more useful data than current testers, especially with the abolishment of the 88-km/h speed limit and the increasing use by automakers of antilock braking systems. Three basic methods designs for testers, the ribbed/blank-tire, the spinup, and the spindown, are evaluated. It is found that the two-wheel ribbed/blank-tire method can be used by existing testers to provide the optimum amount of data without mechanical modifications. The test-wheel spinup method, which obtains the skid number/speed relationship, is recommended for newly built testers.
