Influence of Crumb Rubber on the Functional Characteristics of Asphalt Pavements: Acoustic Performance, Skid Resistance and Self-Sensing Behavior
View through CrossRef
This thesis examines the growing challenges in the functionality of asphalt pavements due to increasing population density and the consequent increase in vehicle use. The motivation for this research stems from the urgent need to mitigate the negative externalities associated with noise pollution and skid resistance, as well as other problems such as traffic congestion, accidents, noise and air pollution. Every year, 1,350,000 people lose their lives on roads worldwide. In 2019, the WHO presented a 64% correlation of hearing loss due to noise pollution, a figure that is projected to reach 69% by 2050, underscoring the critical importance of understanding the complex dynamics of vehicle-road functionality and interaction.
The present study investigates the impact of crumb rubber on the functional properties such as acoustics and skid resistance of dense, discontinuous and open asphalt mixtures. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the contribution of rubber to the functional properties and eco-sustainability of asphalt mixtures.
The research focuses on experimental methods of evaluating the influence of rubber on volumetric, mechanical, and functional characteristics. The effect of rubber on the surface texture of various asphalt mixtures and the influence on sound absorption are still understudied and requires further exploration to understand the impact of crumb rubber on pavement surface texture, as it plays a crucial role in the prevention of traffic accidents and the generation of rolling noise.
Acoustic functional properties were evaluated based on rolling noise absorption and impact attenuation properties by dynamic stiffness on cylindrical samples. In parallel, surface properties such as skid resistance at low and high-speed measurements on plate-type specimens were evaluated, in addition to the surface characteristics of resistance to tangential stress.
The results provided insight into the influence of crumb rubber on the volumetric, mechanical properties, and surface functionality of asphalt mixtures such as sound absorption and skid resistance. Finally, the use of crumb rubber in multifunctional asphalt mixtures with piezoresistive properties was studied to evaluate the sensing capabilities of crumb rubber showing promising results.
