Inner coffin of an anonymous lady

Inner chest of anonymous lady ; Painted on stucco (plaster) ; Third Intermediate Period, 21st dynasty (c. 1069-945 BCE) ; Second cachet of Deir el-Bahari (Bab el-Gasous); The inscription at the foot of this casket states that the deceased was a singer of Amon, but her name was left blank. It seems as if the coffin itself was decorated as the Hall of Judgement. Indeed, the rim of the vessel is decorated with a frieze of alternating uraeus (erect cobra) and a Maät feather (symbol of cosmic order). The paintings show how the Amon singer passes the weighing of the heart with flying colours: her heart weighs as much as Maät. Thot (with ibis head) records the result and the deceased, with feathers in her hands, offers herself to the guardians of the afterlife (with snake head). In the afterlife, she is accompanied by her ba (soul bird) as she stands in worship before the tree goddess and the goddess Hathor as cow (protector of the necropolis). The bottom of the vessel depicts the goddess of the west.
