A Natural Hybrid Between American And Siberian Elms

View through CrossRef
Abstract A triploid elm was found among a group of atypical seedlings selected from a nursery bed of American elms. Cytological, morphological, and biochemical evidence indicated that it was a hybrid between American elm and Siberian elm. Although the tree has not borne any viable seed, it does produce apparently fertile pollen. Thus, it is possible that the triploid may be useful in transferring genes for Dutch elm disease resistance into American elm. Forest Sci. 16: 149-153.
