On the Relationship between Forward and Backward Gapping
View through CrossRef
AbstractThis article examines the relationship between forward and backward gapping, based on the evidence from Polish, a language that allows both types. The two types of gapping differ with respect to polarity mismatches, word order, compatibility with relational modifiers, cumulative agreement, and the ability to gap subconstituents. However, they pattern together with respect to inflectional mismatches, preposition stranding, and the behavior of the remnants with respect to movement constraints. Both the differences and the similarities are argued to follow from two distinct derivations, in which forward gapping involves ellipsis (resulting in two copies of the gapped string), whereas backward gapping involves a multidominant structure with the gapped string being literally shared between the two conjuncts (resulting in a single copy).
Title: On the Relationship between Forward and Backward Gapping
Description:

A Parallel Merge Solution to the Merchant/Johnson Paradox
AbstractThis chapter provides a new argument in favor of a multidominant approach to gapping. The crucial empirical observation it builds on concerns the fact that gapping parallel...

Optimization of Backward Elimination for Software Defect Prediction with Correlation Coefficient Filter Method
Detecting software defects is a crucial step for software development not only to reduce cost and save time, but also to mitigate more costly losses. Backward Elimination is one me...

Postural Change of the Annual Cicada (Tibicen linnei) Helps Facilitate Backward Flight
Cicadas are heavy fliers well known for their life cycles and sound production; however, their flight capabilities have not been extensively investigated. Here, we show for the fir...

Clausal Coordinate Ellipsis (CCE) is a frequent but relatively ill-understood grammatical phenomenon in written and spoken language. It involves the elision of one or more constitu...

Abstract
3’→5’ translation (termed “backward translation”) mediated by eukaryotic circular RNAs has been reported recently. Whether linear mRNA c...

Forward and Backward Pressure Waveform Morphology in Hypertension
We tested the hypothesis that increased pulse wave reflection and altered backward waveform morphology contribute to increased pulse pressure in subjects with higher pulse pressure...

Effect of Backward Walking Versus Forward Walking Training on Balance Among Children with Cerebral Palsy
Background: Cerebral palsy is characterized by long-term impairments in movement and posture that limit an individual’s ability to perform daily activities. Effective rehabilitatio...
