Family Matters: 1900-1905

Abstract THE first years of the twentieth century were golden for families like the Wards. Their income was large—between £6,000 and £8,000 a year—and it went a long way. Domestic service was still cheap and abundant. Dorothy Ward, for instance, interviewed at least nine cooks before finding one she liked for Grosvenor Place in 1903. Kitchen maids, upstairs maids, laundry maids, serving maids could be had for £30 to £100 a year plus board.
