Piłsudski, Jó zef Klemens (1867–1935)

Abstract
Jó zef Klemens piłsudski, a revolutionary turned soldier, was first head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces of the Second Polish Republic. The first marshal of Poland from March 3, 1920, he is best known for his leadership during the RussoPolish War (1919–1920) and the climactic Battle of Warsaw, but his long career included contributions to the struggle for independence before 1918 as well as diplomacy and military affairs between the two world wars. His legacy is complex. Instrumental in founding an independent republic after 123 years of partition, he overthrew its democratic government in May 1926, putting in its place a military dictatorship, which he dominated until his death.
