Mark Rutherford was the pseudonym of William Hale White (1831–1913), civil servant, journalist, and novelist, best known for novels published in the 1880s and 1890s dealing with issues of faith, doubt, and spiritual struggle. The novels include fictionalized autobiography and feature White's own dissenting background in provincial England.
