Paris, Pelops, Hieron II or a Roman Flamen ?

View through CrossRef
Anthony Bonnanno, Paris, Pelops, Hieron H or a Roman flamen?, p. 343-353. A re-edition of a marble relief fragment preserved in the British Museum (No. 555) representing two human heads. Previously interpreted as a Greek relief depicting Paris and Helen, then Pelops and Hippodamia and later the portraits of Hiero II and Philistis, the fragment has been claimed back to Roman art. D.E. Strong's identification of the male figure as a flamen is confirmed while the female figure is identified as a Vestal. The reported provenance from the sea near Agrigento is questioned in the light of the marble's state of preservation, the subject matter, and the history of the Townley collection to which it belonged.
