Hugo Schuchardt – und die romanischen Sprachatlanten

Initiated and edited by Bernhard Hurch, the Hugo Schuchardt Archive (<https://gams.uni-graz.at/context:hsa>) provides access not only to all published writings by this important scholar of Romance languages from Graz, but also to part of his extraordinarily vast correspondence, especially letters addressed to him. They show the diverse, often innovative impulses that Schuchardt gave to linguistics between the 1870s and 1927 in an unequivocal manner. Witnesses of how ­strongly Schuchardt’s cultural-historical and ethnographically based view of linguistics influenced not only language contact research and creolistics (a discipline ­founded by him), but also the development of geolinguistics in its “heroic” period are, above all, the editors and contributors of the AIS: From the first idea for this ideal-typical work on, Karl Jaberg and Jakob Jud sought his advice, which then reached them mostly with impressive speed and comprehensiveness.
