Formant-Period Tracker

One of the principal problem areas in the perfection of the formant-tracker speech-compression system lies in the extraction with the utmost of precision of the formant traces that are pertinent to the preservation in speech of the articulatory events. Under a current research effort [sponsored by the U. S. Army Signal Research and Development Laboratory under Contract DA-36-039-AMC-00006(E)], a number of new methods for achieving such precision in formant tracking have been studied. One of these, which we have called the “Formant Period Tracker,” has shown great promise in achieving this desired goal. This paper discusses the technique, a theoretical evaluation of the technique applied to certain isolated utterances and a means of implementing the technique.
