Abstract
Epaminondas was a Theban leader who played a key role in the Theban Hegemony. Born in the last few years of the fifth century to an aristocratic family, in 371
bce
he commanded the Boiotian army that defeated the Spartans at the Battle of Leuktra, effectively ending Spartan hegemony in Greece. He led four expeditions in the Peloponnese and liberated Messenia, founded Messene, and helped to found Megalopolis (Arkadia). He snatched Oropos from Athens and undertook a naval expedition to undermine the Second Athenian League. Epaminondas died at the Battle of Mantineia in the summer of the year 362
