Abstract
Artificial intelligence companionship represents a groundbreaking frontier that complements (not replaces) and enriches traditional human relationships. This article introduces a conceptual framework called Being-There-For-ness to capture the essence of companionship through two fundamental elements: reliable presence and personal significance. Building on this framework, AI companionship manifests in two forms: Minimal AI companionship provides consistent, dependable support to meet basic needs, while enhanced AI companionship is furthermore marked by mutual engagement, intentional support, and dynamic adaptability. AI companionship represents a unique and significant form of genuine companionship that merits recognition on its own terms. The rapid growth of AI companionship also brings with it a range of challenges, including potential misuse by users, risks of harm caused by the AI to users, management shortcomings, and significant gaps in empirical research. In response, this article examines the regulatory and ethical dimensions of AI companionship, focusing on issues such as data privacy, user autonomy, and the need for comprehensive oversight. The article advocates for dynamic regulatory frameworks that clearly delineate the responsibilities of all stakeholders—including users, companies, governments, developers, and the broader public. Officially recognizing and classifying AI companions can be very beneficial. To achieve this, robust legal frameworks and clear ethical guidelines are needed. This approach helps integrate AI companions into our lives naturally and responsibly, ultimately fostering healthier, more balanced interpersonal connections.
