The evolution and transformation of Wei-Jin metaphysics
View through CrossRef
Abstract: As a significant school in the development of traditional Chinese philosophy, Wei-Jin metaphysics emerged from the intellectual contention of the pre-Qin era, evolved through the dominance of Confucianism during the Han dynasty, and eventually integrated both Confucian and Taoist thought during the Wei-Jin period. This synthesis laid the foundation for the traditional Chinese cultural landscape that persisted after the Tang dynasty, with Wei-Jin metaphysics playing a crucial transitional role. The evolution of intellectual history follows an inherent logic Specific historical contexts invariably shape the emergence of new ideas and build upon existing social thought and developments, addressing previously unresolved issues. Central to the development of Wei-Jin metaphysics is the debate between Confucian orthodoxy and natural spontaneity, reflecting the social turmoil and the time’s spiritual crisis. Scholars of Wei-Jin metaphysics endeavored to establish a new ethical value system. This paper explores the relationship between Confucian orthodoxy and natural spontaneity to elucidate the developmental trajectory of Wei-Jin metaphysics, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of its overarching characteristics.
