Le monnayage d'or de Maxence à l'atelier d'Ostie : à propos de l'aureus au type Pax Aeterna Aug ?

The Pax Aeterna Aug Ν aureus is one of the very few examples of the gold coinage struck in the name of Maxentius at the Ostian mint. Its description by the modern authors is made on the basis of second-hand information. The rediscovery of the coin in Florence allows to decipher a highly original iconography which shows the payment of the aurum coronarium to the emperor following upon the reconquest of Africa. The gold coinage of Maxentius in Ostia seems to fall into three successive sections. The aureus from Florence is to be associated to the second group which was struck at the end of 310 or at the beginning of 311 in prospect of a donatiuum celebrating the reconquest of Africa and Maxentius' quinquennalia at the same time.
